Sun to develop open Video & Audio codec for the web

Apr 14th, 2008 | By Premnath Sah | Category: Technology

Sun Microsystem is planning to build open Video & Audio codec for use on the web. The new codec is said to be royalty free. This new codec is built to power the web and avoid use of Adobe flash video (flv) or H.264 which are royalty bearing. It is called as Open Media Stack (OMS) and its based on H.26x technology.

It is currently unknown whether this will ever catch up as all major video sites like youtube etc are using flash. Browser support is very essential for any video format to become popular/mainstream which is currently enjoyed by Adobe Flash.
