Google’s App engine runs your web applications on their cluster. It will become clearr why i said its only partial competition to Amazon’s services when we see the features of appengine and components in it.
What constitute Appengine?
- Language supported as of now: only Python
- Persistent storage using BigTable and GFS (Google filesystem)
- Automatic scaling and load balancing
- Google APIs for authenticating users and sending email
- Fully featured local development environment provided as sdk
What are its strengths?
- Google infrastructure
What are its weakness?
- No relational database (most application will have to be customized
). - No access to filesystem (have datastore which can be used) but, again customization required.
What we get free?
- 500MB of persistent storage and
- enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month.
