Apr 9th, 2008 | By Premnath Sah | Category: Software, Technology

Google App engine is a web hosting service from google. Can we call it a direct competition to Amazon’s s3 and Ec2 partially yes.

Google’s App engine runs your web applications on their cluster. It will become clearr why i said its only partial competition to Amazon’s services when we see the features of appengine and components in it.

What constitute Appengine?

  • Language supported as of now: only Python
  • Persistent storage using BigTable and GFS (Google filesystem)
  • Automatic scaling and load balancing
  • Google APIs for authenticating users and sending email
  • Fully featured local development environment provided as sdk

What are its strengths?

  • Google infrastructure

What are its weakness?

  • No relational database (most application will have to be customized :( ).
  • No access to filesystem (have datastore which can be used) but, again customization required.

What we get free?

  • 500MB of persistent storage and
  • enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month.

more information soon from us after having a hands on the SDK.
