It is not like people are sitting idle, they are on their way to develop new Javascript engine with all the bell and whistles Google’s V8 and Mozilla’s squirrel fish boasts off.
Carakan
Their current generation Javascript engine was designed with memory utilization in mind. Now, its time to go in for brutal speed. Team at Opera are busy developing their new engine which in internal development phase. They say it will pack following features
- Register-based bytecode
- Native code generation

Carakan Performance
It looks like their initial comparison between current generation engine which is going to released in opera 10 and carakan have given some good results which they can talk about.
It is 200-250% faster than the engine powering opera 10 which inturn is faster by 30% of engine running in Opera 9.6.
its time to celebrate for Opera and for us the users who are going to gain from healthy competition from browser performance enhancements. It looks like Internet explorer will have to catch up a lot or have to do some magic to comeback inline with current generation browsers.
